I am always interested in purchasing collections of North British Railway negatives from pre-grouping through to the final days of British Railways

Here we have a handsome portrait of the typical C16 taken at St Margarets. Being a superheated locomotive, the North British Railway 'tended' to place an additional handrail onto the smokebox door, possibly as a means of identification. However, as you will see in the next photograph there were exceptions, usually as the result of boilers being moved around. The picture also illustrates the large ventilator which was attached to the top of the roof, similar to some of the N14 and N15's.
